Congratulations!

I’ve moved both ways, “one load at a time” and “the movers just dumped all of our possessions in our house / garage”

Both ways suck.

Congrats! While being a homeowner is awesome, if this is the first house you’ve owned, be prepared to have a safety net for when things bite you in the ass. :)

I prefer one load at a time, because I can scuff my own walls  and break a box a dishes for free.

I once paid atlas movers (or someone like that) and then painstakingly went through each box with them and noted every little thing they damaged and actually got reimbursed. If I’m paying a big company to move me across the US, they better not damage anything or they’re paying up.

The same could not be said of a local move I did recently. Paid some random people I hired through uhaul’s website and they damaged furniture and I didn’t receive any reimbursement for the damage.

Atlas/Alexander’s moved me, too.  Only thing was they lost about 15 24"x48" pieces of sheet metal.  Still have to file that claim.

Congrats!

This is how we moved, too. Several nights a week for 3 weeks , we loaded my Dakota with stuff and hauled it over. The weekend we officially had help moving, we only had to move the largest items...and coming from an apartment, that’s not a lot.

Congratulations!

My wife and I did a “hybrid move”. We took one car load at a time of small boxes and miscellaneous stuff . Once our apartment was cleaned out we rented a huge   U-haul truck and made one last trip with all the furniture, and that was it.

One crazy thing we did was unload almost all the boxes right into our living room. We designated one corner of the room as the “donate” area, and as we unpacked we could go through them then and there and decide to get rid of stuff we didn’t want. It was easier than trying to sort as we packed, and having all the crap piled in the front of the house provided a lot of impetus to actually do it.

Also, my suggestion is to consider moving your bed to your nearest Home Depot/Lowes/Hardware store instead of your home, because for the first 6 months you will likely spend more time there than your actual house.

Other pro-tips:

Something semi-major to major will break in the first 6 months. Be prepared. for us it was the water heater about 3 months after we moved in.

When at the hardware store, buy extra parts/materials. It will save you making multiple trips on the same project, and you can always return what you don’t use later.
